Sixth seed Venus Williams has brushed off a shaky start to roar into the quarter-finals of the Australian Open.

The American powered her way to a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Francesca Schiavone, dominating the final two sets against the frustrated Italian veteran.

She now faces the winner of the fourth round match between fourth seeded Dane Caroline Wozniacki and China's Li Na.

Williams, a finalist in the Open in 2003, had won her previous three matches in straight sets and had beaten Schiavone in all of their six meetings going into their fourth round clash.

But she struggled to find form in the opening set before springing to life.

She claimed the second set after a shaky start then raced through the deciding set leaving Schiavone shell-shocked.

The Italian was shut out in the final set, conceding breaks of serve to the American in the second, fourth
