MANILA, Philippines – Francis Casey Alcantara, the 2009 Australian Open Junior Boys’ Doubles champion, opened his title defense with a straight sets win at Melbourne Park’s Court 21 on Monday.

Alcantara and Brazilian Guilherme Clezar won over Korean Jea Moon Lee and Polish Maciej Smola, 6-4, 6-3, according to the Australian Open website.

The No. 8 seed Alcantara-Clezar tandem will face Australians Jason Kubler and Benjamin Mitchell in the 2nd round.

Alcantara made history when he and partner Cheng-Peng Hsieh of Chinese Taipei won the 2009 Australian Open Junior Boys’ Doubles crown. Alcantara became the first Filipino to win a grand slam title.

The 17-year-old netter from Cagayan de Oro earlier bowed out of the singles event in 3 sets on Sunday.

The Filipino netter lost to No. 5 seed Liang-Chi Huang of Chinese Taipei, 6-2, 3-6, 4-6.

Huang had a 1st serve percentage of 76% as opposed to Alcantara’s 61. The No. 5 seed won a total of 92 points while Alcantara won 87 points.
