Steve Williams is the closest guy to Tiger Woods on the golf course. But off the course the caddie to the world's top player says he knew nothing of Woods' affairs.

Speaking for the first time about Woods' marital transgressions, Williams told New Zealand's "60 Minutes" he's mad at Woods and claims if he knew about the infidelities he would have ratted out his boss.

"Of course I am mad at him," Williams said. "I’m more disappointed that he’s let his family down and let himself down. If I’d known something was going on, the whistle would have been blown."

Like his boss, Williams is a millionaire, perhaps a first by a caddie, so he's not about to ruin his working relationship with Woods.

"I’m a friend right now," Williams added. "It’s not up to me to beat him with a stick. He’s getting enough grilling from everybody else. Obviously, at some point, I’ll have a conversation with him."

Williams' wife, Kirsty, also was interviewed for the New Zealand TV program. "Being so close to (Woods' wife, Elin Nordegren), he couldn’t know and not say something to her or to myself. He’s seen as a bad guy. People are calling for him to be fired. It’s not fair."

When Woods does decide to return to the golf course, Williams will be there. He also will handle hecklers and unruly fans if needed.

"Nothing changes," Steve Williams told Australian newspaper, The Sun-Herald. "There are always going to be people who are going to knock you ... Being the No. 1 player in the world and being as successful as Tiger has been, there have been people who have knocked him anyway. I am sure there might be a few more. It goes with the territory."
