On Tuesday, Google announced their new phone, Nexus One, is now available for purchase. The device has been dubbed an “iPhone killer” by some on the Internet, according to CNN.
An unlocked version of the phone can be had contract-free directly from Google for a cost of $529, but can also be purchased through T-Mobile for $179.
After Tuesday's press conference, the official Nexus One Web site went live for U.S. customers interested in the new product.
According to CNN, Google is calling their new device a “superphone.” The device is manufactured by HTC and features a 3.7-inch touchscreen, a compass, an accelerometer, and a 5-megapixel camera. The phone runs on the Android 2.1 operating system, which is made by Google.
Peter Chou, the CEO of HTC said Nexus One “…pushes the limits of what’s possible of a mobile phone today.”
Developers of the phone have stressed a major difference between Nexus One and the iPhone is its “openness” in that it can handle multiple applications from a variety of providers.
Nonetheless, CNN reports developers “downplayed the suggestions of [Nexus One] becoming an ‘iPhone killer.’”
The device will also be available for purchase from Verizon in the Spring of 2010.
